“Liberal Dogmatism – How a far-out idea becomes orthodox.”

http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/liberal-dogmatism_742490.html#

“In his dissent from the…recent overthrow of the Defense of Marriage Act…Antonin Scalia observed that the majority opinion accused the Congress and president…not merely of exceeding their powers but of spreading malice, encouraging stigmatization, and…denying equality. “It is one thing,” wrote Scalia, “for a society to elect change; it is another for a court of law to impose change by adjudging those who oppose it hostes humani generis, enemies of the human race.”

The…campaign for gay marriage (and gay adoption) had swept all before it…from the traditional (for most of human history) understanding of marriage as a heterosexual institution to endorsement of same-sex unions…conducted on the lowest possible intellectual level…that of “equal rights” for all people who love each other. But do any two heterosexual people in love have a “right” to marry? Suppose one of them is already married? Suppose one of them is the child of the other? Sloganeering…was the order of the day…not only in the left wing…but in one state after another, sometimes in the courts, and sometimes…in the legislatures.”
